Year of the Fire Rooster 2017

January 28th 2017 the shift from Fire Monkey to Fire Rooster is complete. 2016 was a wild and crazy year; with the Fire Monkey holding no stops creating a lot of change and along with some alarming surprises. In 2017 the Animal shifts but the element FIRE does not. This element will boost the already Fiery Rooster into a new dimension so expect the year to be equally dynamic.  We can expect it to dial down a ‘notch’ as we move from the extroverted and vocal Monkey to the more posturing and introverted Rooster.
The Monkey Year was aggressive, karmic and although alarming, somewhat necessary. Monkeys leave no stone upturned in their search for the hidden energies. Much of what had not been seen, heard or spoken was unleashed in the Monkey year. Many are still reeling from personal challenges and world events from Fire Monkey mischief.
The Rooster will be a more level year, but I will still caution; be prepared. The Rooster is all about posturing and show. If anything my belief is that there will be as much happening on all levels but it may be more clandestine and hidden. The Rooster’s  external presentation is showy but don’t be fooled; the Rooster reveals what he or she wants you to see. Be careful to examine the nuance of what lies behind appearance. For some it will not be will a year for risk taking unless you are a Snake, Ox or Rooster born. In general the Fire Rooster Year is about following what we know will work best, playing it safe and being well informed; lest we be burned. FIRE can level and destroy anything in its path and this year will be no exception. Fire is bright and scintillating but it  can also be dangerous!
There is a complexity to the year of the Fire Rooster. The base element of the Rooster is METAL which is strong, solid and in control. FIRE however melts Metal and will undermine its ability to be in control. Before we delve into the potentials and possibilities of 2017 lets look at the Rooster personality first.

ROOSTER BORN FOLKS

FullSizeRenderRoosters are natural alarm clocks. They alert us to the new day and new ideas like no other animal. Upfront, fastidious & focused Roosters pay extreme attention to detail and get the job done like no other. Hard work does not hinder them but they can be a bit dictatorial in how they approach things.
Ask any farmer and he will tell you there is never room for more than one Rooster in the barn yard. Obsessive and controlling at times they will fight the odds to keep balance and order around them. As such, Roosters are solitary individuals and often complex characters. Roosters tend to hide any insecurities and will safe guard ideas to maintain their status, especially as leaders.
Roosters wear a natural crown in that ornamental comb atop a brightly colored plumage. And yes, they do expect to be looked at. Roosters therefore can be trend setters in both the Fashion and Business world. Rooster aligns with Virgo in Western astrology and as such are intellectual and thoughtful in their processes. Roosters may be showy but do not expect a Rooster to reveal his or her secrets easily.
Rooster ladies will be well dressed and well versed. They have a natural magnetism that makes an impression. Their wit and natural smarts are disarming, but do not try to pull the wool over her eyes. She is a keen observer and lets nothing get past her!
Rooster men are charming and charismatic yet incredibly shrewd. They can keep the conversation light and witty yet will be filing information on details for future reference.
Roosters in general are natural leaders and are icons in many walks of life. Their unyielding command of situations gain the trust of many but don’t let that facade fool you. If you are going to go into business with a Rooster make sure you sign airtight legal contracts and be in the know about their plans. We can learn much from Roosters but don’t take for granted that they will tell you everything. Ask questions and give them incentives to be more forthcoming. They do need to feel like they are in charge, and many Roosters excel as business partners or employees if given their independence. When Roosters are appreciated for their intelligence and given their rightful status they can be your best friend, employee or partner.

REFLECTIONS ON 1957

Going back to the last Fire Rooster year to observe what events shaped the world can offer a better perspective as to what can or may happen this year. 60 years ago events and inventions shaped the future.

  • The pacemaker was invented in the U.S. by Clarence W Lillehie and Earl Bakk and the first temporary artificial heart was created by Willem Kolff . Both of these inventions were a massive breakthrough in medicine.
  • The first Frisbee was produced by the Wham O company, an item that is still popular and widely used today.
  • John Lennon and Paul McCartney first meet as teenagers at a church event, leading to the formation of their first band, the Quarrymen; precursor to the Beatles. The Beatles had a profound effect on the the ensuing generations and still do.
  • Aviation hit a new level in 1957  with the first ‘around the world flight’, Boeing 707  first flight  and Canada’s Avro CF-105 Arrow being unveiled.
  • The Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite Sputnik1 to orbit the earth resulting in the Race to Space with the USA releasing its satellite a year later.
  • Malaysia gained its independence from the United Kingdom and Singapore gained self Rule.
  • Martin Luther King Jr headed a nationwide resistance to racial segregation and discrimination in the US. As a result the Civil Rights Act is enacted and the US Commission on Civil Rights is established.
  • The EEC ( European Economic Community ) was formed which has had long lasting influence on how Europe conducts business.
  • 1957 was the ‘peak’ birth year for baby boomers which in 2017 creates a massive imprint on our current social systems.
  • Finally, suggesting Fire Rooster symbology, NBC introduced a very showy bird logo; the still recognizable ‘Peacock’ in what was then the newest thing in TV, ‘living color’.

Although there were many other interesting and odd occurrences in 1957 these are but a few. Their impact is still felt and recognized. This aligns with the Showy Fire Rooster and the impact he or she can and will make in 2017.
Looking at Rooster Symbology as well as history allows us to understand better what lies behind Roosters majesty.

THE ROOSTER IN ASIAN MYTHOLOGY

In Asia, the year of the Rooster may also be referred to as the Year of the Chicken or Phoenix. The Phoenix is an pivotal animal in Landscape Feng Shui. It represents the direction south and the ability to fly towards one’s destination in life. The Sun and Fire are synonymous and the symbol of Phoenix who was reborn from the ashes to rise again. Symbolically the Phoenix hold out hope and vision for the future. When  Landscape Feng Shui is applied to the body, the Phoenix is assigned to our fronts, where we look out , see smell and observe all that is around us. When our path is clear our internal ‘phoenix ‘ can take off with confidence,  moving towards what we want and vision in life.  The Phoenix needs a run way to take off, space to spread its wings and fly upwards. To this end a  ‘view’ or ‘seeing where we are going’ empowers us and allows the space in which to look, dream and imagine our direction in life.

When applying this principle in Feng Shui Design, for your home, apartment or business  we refer to the View as The Ming Tang. The word Ming Tang translates into ‘The Great Hall’ represented by the Phoenix. It refers to the ability to see into the distance and is symbolic of knowing where we are going in life. When there is no view or our view is blocked this ability is hindered. Photos on your screen saver or photos and paintings in your home can serve this purpose, but they do not have the same power as having an actual view.
The Phoenix has long been a symbol of prosperity, peace and happiness in many cultures. In the Hindu culture we see it as Garuda, In Tibet it is Me byi karmo and in Russia its called the Firebird just to name a few cultures that honor this animal.

The name Fenghuang is given to the mythical bird of Asia that rules all other birds. Normally paired with The Dragon it is an auspicious decoration at weddings and is considered good luck. In China and Japan it is viewed as an imperial Symbol representing the sun, justice, obedience and fidelity. There are both Male & Female components to this particular ‘Phoenix’ which takes body parts from other animals and is also representative of six celestial bodies; the head is the sky, the eyes are the sun, the back is the moon the wings represent the wind, the feet represent the earth, the tail the planets.

In all the Rooster has a powerful pedigree in Asian cultures and in is a force to be acknowledged. When navigating through the Fire Rooster year its best to give thought to what it is you want to achieve and see how the energy of this powerful Symbol can speak to you. The color Gold paired with the Rooster is considered even more powerful due to the Roosters nature and alignment with the metal element.

WHAT THE ROOSTER YEAR WILL BRING

Reflecting on Rooster personality, historic events and its symbology allow an overview of the energy present in 2017. * to better understand the elements refer to the 5 transformations ~ scroll down past the Animal predictions to find it.

Showy, and independent yet strong and proud, the Rooster seeks control in order to maintain balance. This is key to how Rooster energy will present in 2017. The core elements at play are Fire and Metal. Rooster energy is naturally fiery and visible, Roosters like the spotlight, much like the element FIRE. His location on the Bauga (Feng Shui Compass) is due west, the direction associated with Metal. Metal tends to be rigid and controlling. It is only softened by heat and made malleable, which is a natural but not its normal state.
In the year 2017 the FIRE element dominates. Metal can do with a bit of softening and as Fire evokes passion, visibility and transformation. This year the Rooster then is at odds with itself with the Fire of the year and Metal at its core. The inclusion of the Element Earth will create a more positive supportive energy in a Fire Metal Year. The Earth element offers a grounded solid approach to all undertakings this year. Knowing that Rooster is a formidable worker with a no nonsense approach to life in general is key. Reviewing and keeping in mind Rooster characteristics as noted above, will allow you to navigate your years wisely.

The Rooster year will not be one for taking chances in new business ventures unless you have done your due diligence and your methodology is tried, tested and true. Keep in mind the rigidity (Metal) of the Roosters approach, which also speaks to planning ahead and flawless execution. Hard work and results are the order of the year. Roosters are opportunistic and can sniff out potential winning deals, yet do so in a timely manner and are well prepared.
In 2017 is there is no ‘middle road’; it is best to be focused and clear about goals in all areas of life. If you have not thought out what 2017 may or could be for you, its high time to stop and take stock.

Writing down clear intentions for what you want to achieve or creating an intentional storyboard with images and photos will fine tune the process. What ever your approach to planning this is a good year to get clear. It may set the tone for years to come.
On a fun note 2017 can be a passionate and romantic year for many. Either finding a new love or rekindling an old one. Either way it is a good year to fire up your romantic idealism and make those in your life happy. Everyone loves it when they receive special attention for no obvious reason. Even taking risks in romance and love could work this year. If you have been on the fence about commitment this is the time to get off the fence and get on the roof to crow about in true Rooster fashion.

The Fire aspect of the years annual element will allow us to bring enthusiasm and energy into all aspects of life. Passion, ideology and vision are what Fire brings; control and preciseness is what Metal brings. Another way the Earth element can mitigate or soften this energy is by its presence, so we can feel its potent energy. Having a favorite gemstone visible or wearing one will ‘ground’ the Fire/Metal energy. Practices that ‘ground’ us symbolically are also of importance this year. Getting out and appreciating nature, doing yoga or doing meditation can allow us a calmness in times of uncertainty and stress.

There can be big changes in 2017. Just as we witnessed some eye opening events in the Fire Monkey year 2016, we can expect more of the same. The question to ask is how will you respond? The word ‘responsibility’ speaks to our ability to respond to any give set of circumstances. A Fire Rooster year is an excellent time to observe and do self evaluation.
Roosters are very visible, formidable and loyal to their objectives and ideals. Its easier to read the obvious but what is really going on behind the scenes. Unfortunately the Rooster is not one to tell us. Focused more on results Roosters will keep their methodology hidden. For this reason it is an opportunity to focus on your own ‘modus operandi’: unless you are a Rooster you will never know their strategy. 2017 is a prime year for getting to the bottom of things in your own life. Rooster energy will support you without ever being nosy or probing. Roosters trust that our personal methods are private; it is results that count in the long run in a Rooster year. THE ROOSTER INFLUENCE IN FENG SHUI

On the BAGUA compass the ROOSTER sits in the WEST direction, the number 7 and  influenced by the ELEMENT METAL. It is SYMBOLICALLY the area of CREATIVITY and CHILDREN and the ICHING TRIGRAM is LAKE or TUI. The energy is that of the youngest daughter, the spoiled one, which alludes to leisure and all that glistens; like gold and silver. With this in mind we can ask ourselves  certain questions. Do we take enough time to rest, to treat ourselves and others and take leisure time?  Are we maintaining balance between work and play? Or do we err in the opposite direction and take too much leisure time when we should be working on our goals?
The Rooster may be secretive and selective but he or she shows us integrity and discernment in all things. Being allowed to embrace our shadow sides, and accepting it in others teaches us humility and ultimately compassion. When we own all aspects of our humanness and accept it in others, we embrace all of who we are.
Creating harmony in our lives and spaces is paramount to health and well being. The showy Rooster is also an excellent example of ‘self care’. 2017 it is the year to evaluate the balance in our lives. It is a year to take more pride in your appearance and wardrobe. We can take our cue from the Rooster who makes no apology for the proud stance, magnificent plumage and crowning comb. Creating a new look boosts self esteem and may land you that new job!  Roosters distinctive crow announces the new day with pride and authority. Rooster embraces every new dawn, every new idea, internal and external and moves forward with determination and confidence.

THE FIVE TRANSFORMATIONS

The FIVE ELEMENTS  are the core of understanding the Asian world view. These elements are Earth, Metal, Water, Wood and Fire. The flow of elements show us a harmonious cycle and a controlling cycle. When these are balanced the flow of energy is its most beneficial.
The Harmonious cycle: follow the outer lines of the diagram below
FIRE feeds EARTH which feeds METAL which feeds WATER which feeds WOOD, which in turn feeds FIRE.

Five Elemental Balances

Five Elemental Balances
The Controlling Cycle is this : follow the inner lines of the ‘star’ on diagram above
FIRE melts METAL which cuts WOOD, which displaces *EARTH, which controls WATER which extinguishes FIRE.
This dynamic interrelationship creates a set of circumstances which play out differently each year depending on the Element of the year and the Base element of the animal whose year it is.
